Dentsu India Just Merged Influencer Marketing Into Sports & Entertainment. That's the Real Signal

Dentsu India Just Merged Influencer Marketing Into Sports & Entertainment. That's the Real Signal

Dentsu India Just Merged Influencer Marketing Into Sports & Entertainment. That's the Real Signal

On July 3, Dentsu India announced that it was folding influencer marketing into the same leadership structure as its sports, gaming, entertainment and live experiences businesses, with Rohit Potphode elevated to President, Sports & Entertainment to run the combined unit (BestMediaInfo). On paper, it reads like a routine leadership reshuffle. In practice, it's one of the clearer signals yet that India's biggest ad networks no longer think of "influencer marketing" as its own line item — they think of it as one lever inside a much bigger culture-and-commerce machine.

That timing matters. The restructuring landed the same week that fresh data on IPL 2026 showed just how much money and attention has already flowed into exactly that intersection.

What Dentsu Actually Changed

The announcement came from Yosuke Murai, Dentsu India's Chief Corporate Transformation Officer and head of Sports & Entertainment, who wrote on LinkedIn that the agency is "bringing together our capabilities across Sports, Gaming, Entertainment, Influencer Marketing, Live Experiences and Intellectual Property development under a more integrated leadership structure" (BestMediaInfo). Potphode, who joined Dentsu in October 2025 after two decades across IMG, Viacom, Star, Disney's A&E Network and Times Network, now leads that combined practice, working alongside Raj Thakkar, Paroma Dayal and Aayushi A. on specialist areas within it.

Dayal's own appointment in April, as VP for Sports, Gaming, eSports & Live Experiences, gives a clue to how deliberate this build-out has been. Her mandate explicitly spans "branded content, sponsorships, influencer ecosystems, and integrated advertising across digital, television, and live platforms," reporting directly into Potphode (Dentsu India). This isn't a cost-cutting reorg bolting influencer marketing onto an unrelated desk — it's a multi-quarter bet that sponsorship deals, gaming partnerships, live IPs and creator campaigns are increasingly the same client conversation, sold and staffed by the same team.

Why Now? Look at What IPL Just Did to Creator Spend

The rationale gets a lot more concrete when you look at where creator money in India is actually concentrating. A new industry report found that influencer marketing tied to the Indian Premier League is projected to grow more than 25% year-on-year to nearly ₹700 crore in the 2026 season, up from roughly ₹550 crore in 2025 (Pitch). The number of creators posting IPL-related content, around 1.2 million in 2025, is expected to cross 1.5 million this year.

The category breakdown is the part that should catch a media planner's eye: sports creators account for 32% of total IPL-linked engagement, arts and entertainment creators for 30%, and meme-led content for another 18% — meaning roughly four-fifths of the conversation sits squarely at the sports-entertainment-culture overlap, not in a standalone "influencer" bucket. As the report puts it, IPL has stopped being just a broadcast moment and become "an economy in motion," with value increasingly created in places that didn't exist a few years ago. Instagram carries 52% of that content and YouTube another 28%, and brand spend itself is spreading out: A-list creators still take the largest single share of budgets at 32%, but macro, micro and nano creators together now absorb 43% of spend, a sign that campaigns are being built across tiers rather than around one marquee face.

The Playbook Brands Should Take From This

For marketers, the practical implication isn't "go sign a cricketer." It's that the agency structures brands rely on for planning are visibly moving away from treating influencer marketing as a bolt-on add to a media plan and toward treating it as inseparable from sponsorship, gaming and live experiences. If your agency of record still routes influencer briefs through a separate specialist team that never talks to whoever owns your IPL or festival sponsorship, you're organized the way the market was two years ago, not the way Dentsu — and likely its competitors close behind — are now betting the market will actually work.

That has a few concrete follow-ons worth acting on this quarter: brief sponsorship and creator teams together rather than in sequence, ask your agency partner how creator content plans map onto whichever live property (IPL, a festival calendar, a gaming tournament) you're already paying to be near, and stop assuming a "top-tier influencer" strategy is enough when nearly half of IPL-linked spend is now flowing to macro, micro and nano creators instead.

The Takeaway

Dentsu's reorg is a leadership appointment, not a market mandate — but it's a leadership appointment that only makes sense because the money already moved first. With IPL-linked creator spend closing in on ₹700 crore and four in five engagement dollars sitting at the intersection of sport, entertainment and meme culture, the agencies are simply catching up to where the audience — and the budget — already is. Brands that keep influencer marketing siloed from sponsorship and content planning risk being a step behind their own agencies.
